From Difficult-to-Handle Pills to Reliable Bottling: A Smarter Packaging Solution for TCM Manufacturers

Traditional Chinese medicine has a long history, but its manufacturing environment is rapidly changing.

Pharmaceutical producers are being asked to deliver higher output, more consistent product quality, greater production traceability, and faster changeovers across increasingly diverse product portfolios. China’s current industry policies also emphasize the digital, intelligent, and green transformation of TCM manufacturing, including the development of smart factories and advanced quality-control systems.

For manufacturers of TCM pills and micro-pellets, however, packaging automation is not simply a matter of increasing machine speed. The physical properties of these products create challenges that conventional counting equipment may not be designed to handle.

Small TCM pills can be oily, sticky, electrostatically charged, irregular in shape, or prone to clustering. Micro-pellets may be only a fraction of a millimeter in diameter, making stable feeding and accurate individual counting especially difficult. At the same time, manufacturers may need to fill products into bottles with narrow necks, compact dimensions, or non-standard shapes.

To address these practical challenges, Hengli Packaging has developed two specialized solutions:

    • The Vision-Based Small Pill Counting and Bottling Machine
    • The Micro-Pellet Counting and Bottling Machine

Together, they provide a more targeted approach to automated packaging for conventional small TCM pills and ultra-small micro-pellets.

Why TCM Pills Are Difficult to Count and Bottle

The performance of a pharmaceutical counting line depends heavily on how the product behaves during feeding, separation, detection, and filling.

Unlike standardized tablets or hard capsules, TCM pills may present several challenges simultaneously.

    Oily or sticky surfaces

Certain formulations contain herbal extracts, honey, oils, or coating materials that make the pills less free-flowing. Pills may adhere to contact surfaces or to one another, causing unstable feeding, accumulation, or blockages.

    Static electricity

Lightweight pills and micro-pellets can be affected by electrostatic forces. Instead of moving individually through the counting channel, they may cling to equipment surfaces or travel in clusters.

    Small particle size

As product diameter decreases, the counting window becomes narrower. Extremely small pellets can overlap, move too quickly, or pass through a conventional detection area in dense groups.

    Variations in shape and appearance

Traditional formulations are not always as geometrically uniform as modern compressed tablets. Minor differences in diameter, color, shape, or surface texture can complicate mechanical separation and sensor-based counting.

    Narrow or irregular bottle openings

Some TCM products are sold in compact, portable, or brand-specific bottles. A small or offset bottle opening increases the risk of product loss, bridging, or inaccurate filling during the transfer process.

These issues can result in repeated machine stops, manual intervention, packaging waste, inconsistent bottle counts, and difficulty maintaining stable production at commercial speeds.

Vision-Based Counting for Conventional Small TCM Pills

Hengli Packaging’s Vision-Based Small Pill Counting and Bottling Machine is designed for the automatic counting and bottling of conventional small TCM pills.

With a rated output of up to 100–150 bottles per minute, it is intended for manufacturers that need to combine high production capacity with in-process visual inspection. Actual output will depend on the pill characteristics, count per bottle, bottle format, and line configuration.

The machine’s vision system provides an additional layer of process control during counting. By visually monitoring the product flow, the system is designed to improve counting reliability and help reduce the risk of defective packages reaching downstream operations.

Specialized feeding and filling technology addresses several common TCM packaging problems, including:

    • Oily or sticky pills
    • Static-sensitive products
    • Small bottle openings
    • Irregular bottle shapes
    • High-speed production requirements
    • Product variations between formulations

The machine can also be integrated into a complete bottling line with bottle unscrambling, desiccant insertion, capping, sealing, labeling, cartoning, and serialization or production-management systems.

Precision Counting for 0.5–1.5 mm Micro-Pellets

When particle size falls below the normal operating range of a conventional pill counter, the packaging challenge changes significantly.

Hengli Packaging’s Micro-Pellet Counting and Bottling Machine is engineered for products measuring approximately 0.5–1.5 mm. Its feeding and counting system is designed to separate and detect extremely small particles while maintaining a controlled transfer into the bottle.

The technology has been recognized as a key new technology for promotion and application in Jiangsu Province. According to Hengli Packaging, it was developed to address a long-standing technical gap in the accurate counting and bottling of ultra-small TCM pellets.

The machine is particularly valuable where manufacturers want to replace approximate volumetric or weight-based filling with count-based packaging. Counting can provide a more direct way to control the number of pellets in each bottle, especially when the product specification is defined by units rather than only by net weight.

Like the vision-based small-pill machine, the micro-pellet model is designed to accommodate sticky, oily, or static-sensitive materials as well as small and irregularly shaped bottles.

More Than Speed: Supporting Modern Pharmaceutical Production

The value of specialized counting equipment extends beyond bottles per minute.

    Better process consistency

Automated feeding, separation, counting, and filling reduce dependence on manual judgment. This helps manufacturers reproduce packaging results across operators, shifts, and production batches.

    Reduced manual handling

Less direct product contact can lower the risk of contamination and handling errors. China’s pharmaceutical GMP requires production equipment to be suitable for its intended use, minimize contamination and mix-up risks, and facilitate operation, cleaning, and maintenance.

    Flexible product and bottle changeovers

A pharmaceutical plant may manufacture several pill sizes, formulas, bottle formats, and package counts. Equipment that can handle multiple products and irregular containers allows the manufacturer to respond more efficiently to portfolio changes and smaller production campaigns.

    Improved quality control

Vision-assisted inspection and controlled counting help move quality checks closer to the packaging process. Instead of depending only on final sampling, manufacturers gain more opportunities to identify abnormal product flow or packaging conditions during production.

    Easier cleaning and production management

Cleanability is especially important when one line handles multiple herbal formulations. WHO guidance identifies equipment cleaning and cleaning validation as important measures for preventing contamination and cross-contamination.

A machine designed with accessible product-contact areas and practical changeover procedures can help manufacturers establish repeatable cleaning processes and reduce downtime between batches.

    Choosing Between the Two Machines

The choice depends primarily on product size and production objectives.

Choose the Vision-Based Small Pill Counting and Bottling Machine when:

    • The product is a conventional small TCM pill
    • High-speed production is required
    • Visual monitoring is important
    • The product is oily, sticky, static-sensitive, or irregular
    • The line must accommodate multiple bottle formats
    • The target output may reach 100–150 bottles per minute

Choose the Micro-Pellet Counting and Bottling Machine when:

    • The product diameter is approximately 0.5–1.5 mm
    • Conventional counting technology cannot reliably separate the pellets
    • An accurate number of micro-pellets is required in each bottle
    • The bottle is compact, narrow-necked, or irregularly shaped
    • The manufacturer wants to automate a process currently based on manual, volumetric, or approximate filling

Before final equipment selection, representative products and bottles should be tested under realistic production conditions. Important test variables include particle diameter, surface properties, moisture sensitivity, static behavior, count per bottle, bottle-neck diameter, target speed, and acceptable counting tolerance.

Moving TCM Packaging Toward Intelligent Manufacturing

The modernization of TCM production does not mean changing the identity of traditional formulations. It means applying more reliable and controllable manufacturing technology to preserve product quality at industrial scale.

China’s pharmaceutical sector is steadily moving toward digital production, intelligent equipment, process standardization, and integrated quality control. Government planning specifically encourages the modernization and standardization of TCM manufacturing processes and the development of advanced pharmaceutical equipment.

For pill and micro-pellet manufacturers, counting and bottling is therefore no longer an isolated packaging step. It is an important connection between product quality, production efficiency, regulatory compliance, and brand reliability.

By developing dedicated solutions for conventional small pills and ultra-small micro-pellets, Hengli Packaging helps manufacturers overcome the material-handling limitations that have traditionally restricted TCM packaging automation.

Whether the objective is higher output, more accurate counting, fewer rejected bottles, reduced manual handling, or better compatibility with distinctive packaging formats, the right counting technology can turn a difficult packaging process into a stable and scalable production operation.
